Did You Know? Westvaal Holiday Resort is Over 50 Years Old!

Yes, really!

It all began in 1963 when Johan van der Westhuizen, then just 24 years old, purchased Vlakfontein, an exquisite farm on the banks of the Vaal River.

Though the farm was completely wild and overgrown, Johan knew he had found something special. While parts of the farm had great farming potential, he had no immediate plans for the remaining wilderness.

One day, while making his way down to the river, Johan encountered some strangers trespassing on his newly acquired property. Embarrassed, they explained they had just stumbled upon a fantastic fishing spot. Right then, Johan’s entrepreneurial spirit kicked in, and the idea of creating a unique fishing and campsite experience was born. The natural beauty of the surroundings was the perfect justification.

Clearing the wilderness was a slow and arduous process without heavy equipment and with only a few extra hands. However, Johan was determined and soldiered on until he was finally ready to open the gates of Westvaal Holiday Resort. With the unwavering support of his wife, Baba, he added boreholes for water supply, electricity, ablution facilities, a recreation hall, a swimming pool, a playground, cabins, and more over the years. His hard work and dedication made Westvaal one of the favorite campsites and fishing spots in the area.

Since 2004, we, the second-generation owners of our family farm and resort, Klasie and Charéne van der Westhuizen, have shared our dad, Johan’s passion. His legacy lives on, even after we lost him in 2015. Our hearts are forever grateful for all he taught us.

On a Personal Note…

The pandemic has affected us all in various ways—whether through the loss of a loved one, health issues, income instability, loss of freedom, sanity, or the inability to say a final goodbye to those we’ve lost.

Here at Westvaal, we’ve faced similar challenges. Recovering from this pandemic is a gradual process. After 16 years of renting out our resort, we found ourselves constantly fixing, replacing, upgrading, improving, adding, and maintaining our facilities.

Additionally, the devastating floods of February 2023 have further impacted our progress. We’ve had to deal with extensive damage, which required significant repairs and rebuilding efforts.

In a short space of time, we’ve had to rebuild, and stock our shop and bar, replace a lot of equipment and units, to ensure the health, safety and convenience of our guests.

While we work tirelessly to make our guests feel welcome, safe, and happy, we ask for your patience as we strive to bring our resort up to the standards we aspire to provide.
