🌿 Are We Your Kind of Place?

 

A little reality check before you book.

Westvaal isn’t a silent, manicured hotel behind high walls. We’re a family-run resort in the countryside, on the banks of the Vaal — and sometimes the countryside has opinions of its own. We think that’s part of the charm.

But because everyone’s idea of the perfect getaway is different, here are a few things worth knowing before you decide whether we’re your kind of place.

 

🐓 The farm doesn’t have a snooze button

You may hear roosters, donkeys, horses, dogs and the general soundtrack of rural life.

Roosters, in particular, have never shown much respect for checkout times.

Some mornings are wonderfully quiet. Others begin with a rooster who believes he has been personally appointed by management.

And every now and then, one of the donkeys may decide to join the conversation.

They don’t necessarily know what we’re talking about, but that has never stopped them from contributing.

We’ve tried explaining our quiet hours to everyone involved.

Negotiations remain unsuccessful.

 

🦉 The wildlife was here first

Owls, fish eagles, jackals, monkeys, birds, likkewaans and all sorts of other creatures live around us.

Some are beautiful. Some are noisy. Some may stare at you as though you’re the attraction.

 

And then there are the monkeys.

They’re clever, opportunistic and have spent generations studying human food-storage systems. Please don’t feed them, and don’t leave food where they can get to it.

They’re perfectly capable of becoming management without additional encouragement.

 

And somewhere out there, according to local legend, is the elusive Vaal Croc. 🐊

Sightings are rare, evidence is debatable, and his public-relations team remains unavailable for comment.

We make no promises.

But should you spot him, we’d appreciate photographic evidence.

Preferably taken with a sensible amount of zoom.

 

🎶 Our neighbours occasionally have a soundtrack

Across the river is an off-grid community.

Most of the time you’ll barely know they’re there, but occasionally music or other noise carries across the water.

Unfortunately, the Vaal River does not come with a volume button, and what happens across the river is outside our control.

We strictly manage noise inside Westvaal, but sadly our authority ends somewhere around the middle of the Vaal River.

 

🚗 And yes, civilisation isn’t that far away

We’re tucked away in the countryside, but we’re not hundreds of kilometres from civilisation.

Depending on the weather, atmospheric conditions and wind direction, you may occasionally hear traffic from the highway in the distance.

Other days, you’d hardly know it exists.

Apparently even traffic noise enjoys a little trip down the Vaal when the wind is right.

 

🌳 Nature is… nature

There may be insects. There may be mud after rain. Leaves fall. Birds poop. Monkeys occasionally make questionable life choices. River levels change. Grass sometimes loses an argument with a flood.

We do what we reasonably can, but creating a completely insect-free, mud-free, leaf-free and wildlife-free environment would require getting rid of most of the environment.

In other words: Westvaal is a real place, beside a real river, surrounded by real countryside.

And we rather like it that way.

🌳 Camping at Westvaal

Our campsites were designed by nature

Well… mostly.

Our camping areas have grown around the landscape that was already here — mature trees, natural shade, open spaces and the riverbank — rather than clearing the landscape first and dividing it into identical squares.

In other words:

We designed our campsites around nature, not nature around our campsites.

That means you won’t find rows of perfectly square, tape-measured stands with neat little borders.

Some sites are wider. Some are deeper. Some are an interesting shape. Sometimes a rather magnificent tree gets the final say about where your caravan goes.

And we rather like it that way.

You’ll find a mixture of natural ground and grass, with established trees throughout the camping areas.

And funny enough, the natural setting is one of the things we receive the most compliments about.

Guests love camping amongst the trees, the shade, the space and the feeling that they’re actually camping somewhere that has grown naturally over many years rather than on a piece of land divided into rectangles.

Occasionally, those compliments even come from the same people wondering why their campsite isn’t perfectly square. 😉

We could remove trees, straighten boundaries and make everything more uniform.

But we’d lose the very thing people tell us they love about camping here.

So bring your caravan, your tent and perhaps a little flexibility about which direction everything faces.

The trees aren’t in the way.

They’re part of the campsite. 🌿

 

🌱 And no, we can’t guarantee grass

Especially right beside the river.

Flooding, high water, shade, seasons, camping traffic and the general determination of nature all influence what grows where.

We’ve also experienced several significant floods in recent years, and re-establishing lawns along the riverbank takes time.

Some campsites may have lovely lawn. Others may be mostly natural ground. Some will be somewhere in between.

They’re all perfectly usable — they’re simply part of a landscape that changes.

A campsite without perfect grass is still a campsite with a Vaal River view.

🏕️ Camping is still camping

Even when there’s electricity.

Our campsites offer the comforts you need for a great camping holiday, but you’re still outdoors.

The ground may not be perfectly level. There may be roots. A tree may determine where your tent goes. A branch may drop a leaf on your caravan. A bird may drop something considerably less charming on your freshly washed caravan.

Your neighbour may start making coffee before you do.

That’s camping.

If a little unpredictability is part of the adventure for you, you’re in exactly the right place.

 

🌊 Life beside a real river

 

The Vaal is a river, not a swimming pool

The river changes.

Water levels rise and fall. Currents change. Riverbanks can become muddy and slippery after rain or high water, and conditions can look completely different from one visit to the next.

Operations at the Barrage can also affect the water level, sometimes quite noticeably.

Please treat the river with respect, supervise children and don’t assume that because something was safe or accessible on your previous visit, conditions are identical today.

Nature reserves the right to rearrange the furniture.

 

🧱 We’ve got a few flood scars

Living beside a beautiful river has a downside:

Every now and then, the river decides it would like to visit us too.

We’ve experienced several significant floods in recent years, which have meant repairing, rebuilding, levelling, replanting… and occasionally doing it all over again.

You may therefore notice areas where grass is still recovering, riverbanks are being restored, access points have changed or things look a little more work in progress than manicured resort brochure.

We’re continuously repairing and improving.

But we’re also realistic.

When you live beside a river, the river occasionally gets the final say.

 

📸 Yesterday’s photo isn’t necessarily today’s riverbank

Our photos show the real Westvaal — but Westvaal changes with the seasons.

The river may be higher or lower. Grass may be green, dry, newly planted or temporarily absent. Trees grow. Riverbanks change. Flood recovery continues.

A campsite photographed in summer may naturally look quite different in winter.

We don’t manufacture a picture-perfect landscape for photographs and then expect nature to keep it that way.

So while our photos give you a good idea of what to expect, the exact scenery around your campsite or unit may change throughout the year.

We think that’s part of the beauty of staying somewhere that’s still connected to the landscape around it.

 

🎣 A word for our anglers

 

Riverfront doesn’t mean private river

Our riverfront campsites and accommodation share something pretty special — access to the Vaal.

But everybody deserves a fair chance to enjoy it.

Guests should fish in line with their own campsite or unit rather than spreading out across somebody else’s frontage.

Additional open fishing spots may be available to guests staying further back, generally on a first-come basis.

The fish, unfortunately, have declined our repeated requests to distribute themselves equally among guests.

 

Fishing is still fishing

We know. This sounds obvious.

But even at one of our favourite fishing spots, we cannot guarantee that you’ll catch fish.

Weather, river conditions, water levels, season and the fish’s apparent personal feelings all play a part.

We’ll provide the river.

Negotiations with the carp are entirely between you and them.

 

🪝 Even the bottom of the river moves

The Vaal doesn’t only change above the waterline.

From time to time, currents and changing water levels shift the riverbed too. Sand, silt, branches and other natural obstacles move around beneath the surface — which means the underwater landscape isn’t necessarily the same from one visit to the next.

For our anglers, this has one particularly annoying consequence:

Fishing lines sometimes get stuck.

And no, unfortunately we can’t give you a handy map of exactly where.

A spot that was perfectly clear last month may have an underwater obstacle today, while somewhere that regularly snagged lines before may have cleared.

It’s a river doing river things.

So bring a little spare tackle, don’t become too emotionally attached to your favourite sinker, and remember:

What’s happening beneath the Vaal is about as predictable as the fish you’re trying to catch. 🎣

 

🚿 A few creature comforts — Westvaal style

 

🔥 Our hot water comes with a little old-school charm

Both of our camping ablution blocks use traditional wood-fired donkey boilers for hot water.

They have a pretty generous capacity, and during the day we keep them fired and the water heated. There should still be plenty of hot water available into the evening too.

 

But there’s a small art to donkey-boiler showering.

 

First: give it a minute.

The hot water sometimes has quite a journey through the pipes before it reaches you.

When you first turn on the tap, the water already sitting in those pipes may still be cold.

Let it run for a little while before deciding the donkey has gone on strike.

The hot water may simply still be making its way to you.

 

Second: try the hot tap on its own first.

Donkey-boiler water isn’t always quite as hot as an electric geyser, particularly after lots of showers.

Sometimes adding cold water immediately simply turns perfectly showerable water into… well, cold water.

Test the hot water first, then add cold if you need it.

 

On normal weekends, the stored water often stays warmish overnight.

On busy weekends, however, a lot of humans can get through a lot of hot water. Because we don’t keep the fires going throughout the night, hot water may eventually run out or cool down during the late-night and early-morning hours.

We fire the donkeys up again in the morning and keep them going through the day.

So no, hot water doesn’t disappear when the sun goes down.

But at 03:17 on a packed long weekend?

The donkey may quite reasonably be off duty. 🔥🚿

 

🚿 Our accommodation doesn’t have private bathrooms

This is an important one.

Our accommodation units don’t have bathrooms inside them.

Because of our proximity to the river and environmental considerations, we make use of communal ablution facilities, positioned safely away from the river and above the 100-year floodline.

They’re within walking distance of our accommodation and camping areas.

So if your dream holiday absolutely requires an en-suite bathroom three steps from your bed, we’d rather tell you now:

Westvaal may not be the right match.

If you’re comfortable with good old-fashioned holiday-resort ablutions, you’ll be just fine.

 

⚡ Electricity is available. Nature still gets a vote.

Our campsites have electrical points for normal camping use, but we’re still a rural resort.

Power interruptions can happen, whether from the electricity network, weather or circumstances outside our control.

Our campsite supply is also intended for normal camping equipment, rather than trying to recreate an entire suburban household next to the caravan.

If there is an interruption, we’ll always do what we reasonably can from our side — but sometimes the problem is further up the line than Westvaal.

A torch or rechargeable light in the camping box is never a bad idea.

Besides, they’re surprisingly useful even when Eskom is behaving itself.

 

📶 No resort Wi-Fi. Yep, we said it.

We don’t offer resort Wi-Fi.

Mobile LTE coverage is generally available, but signal strength and speed can vary.

For some people, that’s a negative.

For others, it’s the moment the teenagers finally look up and discover there’s an actual river outside.

We’ll let you decide which camp you’re in.

 

🌿 Sharing the place

 

🐕 We’re pet-friendly-ish

We love animals, but we’re not an unrestricted pet-friendly resort.

Small lap dogs are welcome at campsites only, by prior arrangement, with a maximum of two.

They need to remain on a leash and under control.

Pets aren’t permitted inside our accommodation units.

This protects our accommodation, other guests and the wildlife that already considers Westvaal home.

It also saves us from refereeing territorial negotiations between somebody’s Chihuahua and a monkey.

Nobody wins that meeting.

 

🐕 And then there’s Shadow…

Some of our long-time guests may know Shadow, our resident dog and occasional self-appointed Westvaal security officer.

Shadow used to spend considerably more time down at the resort.

These days, his resort privileges are somewhat… restricted.

Let’s just say Shadow takes his responsibilities regarding certain members of the local wildlife a little more seriously than management would prefer.

A particular likkewaan may have been involved.

There was an incident.

HR was consulted.

Shadow now spends most of his time away from the main resort area, contemplating his choices.

He remains very much part of the Westvaal family — just perhaps not part of the official wildlife welcoming committee.

 

😇 We have awesome guests. Almost suspiciously awesome.

We’re incredibly lucky with the people who stay at Westvaal.

99.99999% of our guests are genuinely lovely people who come here to relax, fish, camp, braai, spend time with their families and let everyone else do the same.

Many have been coming back for years — even generations — and that’s one of the things we love most about Westvaal.

But there is one small limitation to our reservation system:

It doesn’t come with a personality test.

When somebody makes a booking, we don’t know them from a bar of soap.

We have rules, quiet hours and people on site to deal with problems, and thankfully serious issues are extremely rare.

But we can’t guarantee the personality, honesty, common sense or behaviour of every human being who books a campsite or accommodation.

Every now and then, someone may be louder than we’d like. Someone may decide a rule surely applies to everybody except them. Someone may be grumpy. Someone may have questionable campsite etiquette.

We’ll deal with behaviour that’s brought to our attention and within our control.

But just as we can’t guarantee that the fish will bite, the rooster will sleep late or the monkeys will make good life choices…

We can’t issue a character reference for the stranger camping three trees down.

So please use the same common sense you would anywhere else: look after your belongings, respect your neighbours and let us know if something isn’t right.

Chances are, though, you’ll end up having a chat over the fence, lending somebody a braai tong, or waving goodbye to people whose names you didn’t know three days earlier.

That’s much more typically Westvaal. 🌿

 

🎉 We’re really not a party resort

This one isn’t negotiable.

Westvaal is a family holiday resort.

You’re welcome to laugh, braai, visit with friends, enjoy a drink and have a wonderful time.

But we don’t allow parties, excessively loud music or behaviour that spoils other guests’ holidays.

Quiet hours are 22:00–07:00, and after 22:00 we expect the resort to settle down.

If you’re looking for somewhere to bring speakers and see whether Vanderbijlpark can hear your playlist from the Free State:

We’re probably not your place.

If you’re looking for somewhere to sit around a fire with your favourite people while the river goes past:

Now we’re talking.

 

🔥 Campfires: absolutely. Veld fires: not so much.

A braai, a fire and an evening outdoors are part of the experience.

You’re welcome to enjoy a fire in the designated braais and fire pits.

Please don’t make fires directly on the grass or open ground.

This isn’t us trying to ruin the fun.

It’s us trying to ensure Westvaal is still here for your next visit.

 

🚗 A few practical things

 

🌧️ Weather happens here

We’re an outdoor resort.

Rain makes things wet. Sometimes muddy. Wind blows. Summer can be hot. Winter mornings can be properly cold. Storms happen.

Leaves fall out of trees with absolutely no consideration for our cleaning schedule.

After heavy rain, the riverbank may also be muddy or slippery.

Pack for the weather rather than just the Instagram photo — or the forecast screenshot you took three days ago.

 

🛣️ Your GPS occasionally has adventurous ideas

Not every road suggested by navigation apps is one we’d recommend.

Some alternative routes can be in poor condition, particularly after rain, which is why we provide our own recommended directions to Westvaal.

Your GPS may think it has discovered an exciting shortcut.

We admire its optimism.

If it suddenly decides that a tiny road you’ve never seen before will save you four minutes:

You do not have to accept the challenge.

Follow our recommended directions instead.

 

🛒 We’re not in the middle of town

And that’s rather the point.

We’re around 25 km from Sasolburg and Vanderbijlpark and approximately 35 km from Parys.

We have our own little shop for essentials, but we’re not within walking distance of a supermarket, shopping centre or 24-hour convenience store.

So if there’s something you absolutely cannot live without, bring it along.

This isn’t the ideal place to discover at 21:30 that your very specific brand of oat milk is essential to human survival.

Bring the things you can’t live without. We’ll supply the getaway.

 

🚪 We don’t have a 24-hour reception

We’re a family-run resort, not an airport hotel.

Our gates close at 19:00 and reopen at 07:00.

Standard check-in is 14:00–19:00, and checkout is 08:00–11:00.

Late-arrival arrangements can be made where applicable, but we’re not a 24-hour hotel reception.

The countryside goes to bed too.

Except for the jackals.

And apparently the rooster is already preparing for tomorrow.

 

📞 Sometimes we’re easier to text than to call

We’re a hands-on, family-run resort — and sometimes the hands that answer the phone are also busy helping guests, checking arrivals, sorting something out at the resort or dealing with whatever surprise the day has delivered.

On busy days and weekends, our phone lines can get very busy, and we may not always be able to answer your call immediately.

If you can’t get through, the easiest option is to send us a WhatsApp message on 076 525 0575.

Your message won’t disappear just because we couldn’t answer it immediately, and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

A little patience is always appreciated.

We promise we’re not sitting behind the desk watching the phone ring while pretending nobody’s home. 😉

Sometimes we’re simply out there running the place you’re trying to visit. 🌿

 

🛏️ You may need to bring your own bedding

For most accommodation booked directly with us, fitted sheets are supplied, but guests bring their own bedding and towels.

Bedding may also be available as an optional extra where offered.

Bookings made through certain online booking platforms may include linen and towels, so check the details of your particular reservation.

It’s one of those things that’s much nicer to discover before you arrive with one pillow and tremendous optimism.
